5 Small Habits That Can Make a Huge Difference on Your Big Day

Found a dress? Check. Found a venue? Check. Bridesmaids? Check. DJ or Band? Check.

As we all know, planning a wedding is no task for the faint at heart. So many decisions, appointments and hard choices. Obviously, getting the guest list planned out and finding a venue is incredibly important but there is a lot to be said about the littles things that you can do ahead of time to make a difference on your big day.

  1. Making Healthy Food and Movement Choices

Whether you are “sweating for the dress” or not, you want to feel good leading up to your big day. If you don’t know where to start, you can begin by slowly swapping in more nutritious choices months before the big day. Adding more vegetables and getting plenty of healthy fats and protein, preferably from grass fed or pasture raised sources, is a great way to start. Building upon this habit with nutrition early on will give you plenty of time to meet your goals, and will allow this habit to be sustainable in the long run. The same goes for exercise and movement. Pick an exercise routine that is sustainable, enjoyable and effective. Rushing into the gym a month before your wedding and pushing yourself 7 days a week on the elliptical can easily lead to burnout and fatigue. Months before your wedding date, start an exercise plan that is varied, gives you plenty of rest and is enjoyable. Don’t forget, exercise is a stressor on your body and you might already feel stressed from the wedding, so listen to your body! Too much stress leads to burnout and fatigue. Rest is the most important part of the workout. A great plan to start with is doing HIIT 1x a week and strength training a 2-3x a week, with plenty of walking outdoors and hiking, if you enjoy it. You should feel energized and empowered after most workouts, not drained and beaten. This coupled with a nutritious diet will most definitely have you feeling your best!

  1. Creating Good Sleep Hygiene

Sleep is the least sexy topic I could ever bring up, but it is so important that I couldn’t leave it out! If you you have the mentality of “I will sleep when this is over!” than you might want to reconsider your outlook. Most Americans are chronically sleep deprived, and it’s so easy to push sleep to the bottom of your list of priorities, especially with a wedding coming up. However, sleep deprivation can cause weight gain, increased susceptibility to being sick, depression, accelerated aging in the skin and so much more. I know it’s hard to stop what you’re doing at night and get into bed, but it can make a huge difference. A small habit you can start immediately is implementing an electronics curfew 1-2 hours before your planned bed time. That means no phone, computer, TV or iPad (House of Cards can wait, I promise!). Try incorporating more relaxing habits like meditating, reading a good book (nothing too thrilling, it might spike adrenaline) taking an epsom salt bath or doing some restorative yoga before you get into bed. Your room should be as dark and cool. Great sleep hygiene is a habit, so stay on course you might see some drastic improvements in your brain function, mood, skin quality and appetite! Nothing can replace a good nights sleep.

  1. Investing in Your Skin Care

A nutritious diet and plenty of sleep will definitely improve your skin, but you may want to add that extra piece that will have you feeling amazing on the big day. No matter what issues you may be battling with your skin, you will want to invest in high quality skin care products. Go for natural creams, serums, washes and scrubs that aren’t full of harsh chemicals. The skin on your face is very delicate and sensitive, and doesn’t benefit from tons of chemicals being put on it. You should also care out time specific for you and your partner. Don’t allow wedding planning to be the only time you spend together, make time separate from wedding planning to do an activity you enjoy together. If you are having trouble doing that, give yourselves 10 minutes a day, to talk and connect about things other than the wedding. A bride and grooms sense of connection can easily get lost among the wedding planning, and this small habit can help foster your sense of connection to one another, aside from the wedding.

Finding a trusted on-location hair and makeup team can make a huge difference for you and your bridesmaids. Pick out a few looks you like and book your trial appointment. This is the perfect time to see if you like the look you chose and make any adjustments to your look with your hair and makeup artist. Take a lot of pictures and be vocal with your artists, they really want to make sure you look and feel your best! After the trial, grab your artists email and phone number and stay in contact with them if you have any mixed feelings about your look. Booking these trial appointments months ahead of time ensure that you won’t be stressed about your hair and makeup on your big day, you will know what to expect. It also give you plenty of time to make adjustments with your artist, letting you stress about one less thing.
